FREDA MAVIS (JENKINS) SALA PLUTA
25 July 1922 – 30 October 2020
Immediate family members attended the Internment of Freda’s ashes at Punchbowl, the National Veterans Cemetery of the Pacific, on 25 July 2022, her 100th birthday. The delay was due to Hawaii’s strict Covid restrictions on gatherings and travel.
Adhering to the 15 minutes allotted, the Hawaiian officiant’s ceremony blessed her life and the importance of family strength. Kahu Kalehua presented a small calabash of blessed Hawaiian black sand, from the Big Island, to each Cheryl and Valma. Also a blessed ti leaf for them to take her spirit to the mountain or ocean.
Afterwards, a Celebration of Freda’s Life and 100th Birthday Luncheon was enjoyed by family and friends at the Waimanalo beach house. At the end of the day a rainbow appeared offshore. The following week, Cheryl and Valma took the ti leaf to Lanikai beach, where they grew up, and floated it on the outgoing tide, hoping to unite her spirit with Brian’s spirit off the Mokulua Islands.
