OK, so this might not be your cup of tea, but the Bar Convent is England’s oldest living convent, established in 1686 as a school for girls. Today, the Grade I Listed building is one of York’s most unique places to stay, promising peace, quiet and friendly service in a heritage setting. The rooms are largely en-suite, with a few lower-priced rooms on the top floor with shared bathroom facilities. There is an award-winning café on site, It’s situated a short walk from the station and is a stones throw from Micklegate Bar.
With private, en-suite rooms, as well as the usual shared rooms, this hostel is a step up. It’s located right on the Ouse river and very near the park we will probably be using for the Saturday picnic. A short bus ride, or a 25 minute stroll along the riverside path, will get you into town.
